Welcome Back Peters Canyon Elementary School!
The 2018-19 school year has begun and the staff at PCE is ready for a great year! We spent the summer learning and rejuvenating and are ready to inspire our young learners to grow and achieve. Teachers attended the TUSD Summer Institute learning about NGSS Science Standards, Mathematics instructional strategies, and Mindfulness. In mathematics teachers will implement pedagogical practices that focus on the development of students' mathematical thinking. Teachers are refining instructional practices that expand mathematical thinking and increase the conceptual understanding students bring to the math learning process, as well as how students use that knowledge to connect with formal concepts and operations. NGSS are the newly adopted science standards. Teachers will continue to use hands-on learning strategies to bring science concepts to life. They will weave the Science and Engineering Practices into the Physical Sciences, Earth/Space Sciences, and Life Sciences. Teaching Mindfulness is part of teaching the “whole child.” Students will learn self-awareness, calming strategies, and ways to manage stress within the context of school.
We will continue our “Bucket Fillers” Campaign this year. Through our Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Program, we will be focusing on how we can fill someone else's emotional bucket through our actions and how we can avoid “dipping” into someone else's emotional bucket. This is a great way for young children to connect with how their actions impact others and develop empathy.
Although our staff development will be in the areas of math and science this year, our implementation and refinement of Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop will continue. During Reader's Workshop, teachers will ensure students are reading “just right” books at their independent reading levels and that they are applying the skills and strategies learned during daily mini-lessons. They will be assisting your child in developing a passion for reading by exploring a variety of genres. During Writer’s Workshop, teachers will be providing direct instruction in specific writing techniques and strategies and students will apply their learning to a variety of authentic writings of their own. Through the leadership of our GATE Lead, Tracey Smith, our scholars will focus on two GATE Thinking Prompts each month. Samples of scholars’ work at all grade levels will be posted on our school website to help families better understand how GATE strategies are integrated in a “GATE Cluster” general education setting what GATE instruction looks like “in action.”
Thanks to the generosity of our PTO, our students will continue to experience Bravo Music, Meet the Masters Art, field trips, assemblies, on campus events, and instructional support. We are immensely grateful for the experiences and support we are able to provide at PCE through our PTO and our volunteers!
Lastly, I would like to welcome our newest staff members. Elise Hong (1st/2nd) is a veteran TUSD teacher and comes to PCE from Myford Elementary. She is familiar with all of our current curricula and programs and will be a great addition to our staff. Sheri Bauer has changed roles at PCE and is now serving as our Cotsen Mentor Teacher. Courtney Smith is joining our staff as our Connect Coach and brings a wealth of experience from her years at TMA. Dawn Deines, also a veteran TUSD teacher, joined the PCE team and is bring her expertise to 3rd grade. Lastly, Jill Silberman, new to TUSD is teaching our TK class. We know it is going to be a fabulous year at PCE!
