2020 8th Grade Promotion Activities & Information



Dear Eighth Grade Students and Parents:

As we approach the holidays, we wanted to update you on the exciting events to come for our 8th grade students.  To celebrate their accomplishments, Orchard Hills School and the Orchard Hills PTO have planned the following 8th grade activities.  We are giving you this information in advance to help with planning and budgeting, and to remind you that all students must be academically and socially eligible to participate in these activities.

NEW THIS YEAR! The Orchard Hills PTO has set up a new website at  If you haven’t already done so, please go online and register your student, making sure your contact information, including your email and cell phone number, are correct.  After this letter, we will be communicating about all 8th Grade Promotion activities, including ticket purchases and update communications, via the PTO website and its email system. There will be no further communications sent home by hard copy. Don’t miss out on any important information – please register today!    

    • T-Shirts will be distributed on FEBRUARY 14th DURING NEST.
    • Students are encouraged to wear the class shirt in the panoramic class picture and at other class events (although purchase of the t-shirt is not required to participate).
  • 8th GRADE INDIVIDULAL PICTURES:  Week of January 27th (During PE periods)
    • A professional photographer will capture each student’s personality during a photography session held during their PE period.
    • You can view your child’s photos online without an obligation to purchase.  Prices will start at approximately $7 for a single print and $30 for a digital file.
  • 8th GRADE PANORAMIC PHOTO: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28th in the Quad during NEST.
    • This keepsake class photo will be taken during school and will be available for purchase for approximately $17, for non-laminated photos, and $22, for laminated photos. Students are encouraged to wear their Class of 2020 t-shirts for this photo, although purchase of the t-shirt is not required to participate in the picture.
  • 8th GRADE PARENT NIGHT @ BECKMAN HIGH SCHOOL: TUESDAY, MARCH 24, 2020 from 6:00-8:30pm at Beckman High School. Parents ONLY.
  • 8th GRADE EXIT INTERVEIW: FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2020 in the OH GYM. Students ONLY.
    • Students will meet one-on-one with a community leader to showcase a collection of their best work and accomplishments.
    • Students are expected to dress in professional attire (i.e., jacket and tie for boys and dresses or pant suits for girls).
  • 8th GRADE AWARDS ASSEMBLY: THURSDAY, MAY 21, 2020 from 10:00-11:30am in the OH QUAD
  • 8th GRADE PROMOTION: THURSDAY, MAY 21, 2020 from 3:00-4:30pm in the OH QUAD
    • Each student will receive FOUR complimentary admission tickets for family members to attend the promotion ceremony.
    • A limited opportunity to upgrade these four tickets to a VIP section will be available at an auction in Spring 2020.
    • Each family member, including children of any age, must have a ticket to enter the promotion ceremony in the middle school quad.
  • 8th GRADE DISNEYLAND TRIP:  TUESDAY, MAY 26th from 8:00am - 6:30pm
    • Buses will leave Orchard Hills in the morning and return that evening.
    • Students may not be dropped off at, or picked up from, Disneyland.  Students must take the bus from, and back to, the school.
    • The cost is $115.00 per student, which includes a Disneyland admission ticket and round trip bus transportation.
    • Students should bring additional money for food and miscellaneous items.
    • For students who have a Disneyland annual pass, the transportation cost is $10.00.  Please be aware of specific blackout dates if your student has an annual pass.
  • 8th GRADE PROMOTION PARTY/DANCE: WEDNESDAY, MAY 27th in the OH MPR from 5:30-8:00pm
    • The party will be held at school. The cost is $35.00 per student, which includes dinner, dessert, DJ and more. 
    • The party will be at night; however this is NOT a formal event.  Attending students must follow all dress code guidelines, which are outlined in the Orchard Hills Code of Conduct.

  • Yearbooks are available for purchase ONLINE ONLY from August 2019 to April 2020.
  • There will be NO OH Middle School (Grades 6-8) Yearbooks sold by cash or check at the end of the year.

PART 1 - The Notebook
The format is up to the student… (Binder, iPad, Haiku, Flash-drive)
Set up the following sections:

PART 2 - The Interview (One-on-One)
Each Student will respond to the following 7 questions:
  1. Please show me (and describe) a work sample you are most proud of.
  2. Please describe for me how you have become an effective communicator at Orchard Hills.
  3. Please describe how you have been challenged at OH to think critically and independently.
  4. Please describe for me what it means to be a productive and responsible citizen.
  5. Describe how you have worked towards the attainment of your Element.
  6. Is there anything else you would like to share with me?
  7. Do you have any questions for me? OR Interviewer may choose to share about his/her own career.
