Volunteering in the community is beneficial for all participants and an important part of Hillview’s philosophy of giving back.. It not only services those in need, but gives the volunteers a sense of pride and accomplishment. With this in mind, Hillview started a school-wide volunteer program called Hillview Helpers. Students who wish to participate apply for the program each month, and small groups are selected to go to Thorman Elementary School. The students work in classrooms around the campus.
The Hillview students work one-on-one or in small groups with Thorman students to strengthen reading and math skills. In addition, they assist with science experiments, organize center activities, play with kids at recess and work with the students during physical education activities or anything else the teachers need. One Hillview student said, “I loved working with the kids. It was the best day ever!”
