2022 SUMMER READING

English 1 Honors

Welcome to summer ! The freshman English team hopes you have an incredible summer filled with joy, excitement, and time with family and friends. We also look forward to being a part of your high school adventure. All advanced English courses at Foothill assign a summer reading task to students to complete before the first day of school to prepare you for a strong start at Foothill.

Required Reading

As an incoming ninth grader taking English 1 Honors, you should read Ray Bradbury’s collection of short stories entitled The Illustrated Man BEFORE the first day of school . The book includes a prologue, epilogue, and eighteen short stories that range in length from five to fifteen pages. This summer reading will provide you an opportunity to become familiar with
Bradbury’s style before we study his novel Fahrenheit 451 during the first quarter.

The Illustrated Man is available online and in local bookstores for around $10.00, or you can read it online by going to https://bit.ly/BradburyPDF.

Assignment

During the first weeks of school , you will discuss and write about some of your favorite stories in the book. As you read them, you should take a few notes about each story. In particular, you should focus on the following:

  • Central themes and main ideas;

  • characters and how they develop.

We hope you enjoy the reading! I f you have any questions, please contact any of the English 1 Honors teachers:
