Summer Reading 2021

Reading:
In preparation for the Fall semester of 2021, English 1H students should read Ray Bradbury’s collection of short
stories entitled The Illustrated Man prior to the first day of school. The book includes a prologue and epilogue,
eighteen short stories, and range in length from five to fifteen pages. This reading will provide students an
opportunity to become familiar with Bradbury’s style and use of figurative language, as we will be taking a
more in-depth study of his work when we read Fahrenheit 451 during the first quarter.

Assignment and Assessment:
During the first weeks of school, students will write a series of summaries and critiques of some of their
favorites, and will be engaged in collaborative discussions, as well as an oral presentation. Instructions and
rubrics will be provided for students during the first few days of school, but students need to read with the
following standards in mind.

RL 9.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as
well as inferences drawn from the text.

RL 9.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course
of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective
summary of the text.

RL 9.3 Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop
over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.

RL 9.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative
and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone

The Foothill English 1H staff hope you have an incredible summer, filled with joy, excitement, and time with
family and friends, but we also look forward to being a part of the adventure that is high school. We know that
not every story in this book will speak to you, but as C.S. Lewis once said, “We read to know we are not alone.”
Take to heart that we ask you to read not to give you a grade, but to help build in each of you a love for
literature and the beauty of a well-told story.
