AVID College Trip to Cal Poly SLO

What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a structured and rigorous college preparatory elective program for self-motivated, potential college-bound students. To find out more about AVID, please visit the national AVID Website

AVID’s Mission and Proven Success

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

For over 35 years, AVID has become one of the most successful college-preparatory programs ever for students. Beginning with one high school and 32 students, AVID now impacts more than 1.5 million students in more than 5,700 schools and 43 postsecondary institutions in 46 states, the District of Columbia, and across 16 other countries/territories.

Although AVID serves all students, the AVID Elective focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. The formula is simple—raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge. What distinguishes AVID from other educational reform programs is its continuous success rate. Of the 42,418 AVID seniors reporting data in 2015-16, 95 percent reported plans to attend a postsecondary institution: 63 percent to a four-year college and 32 percent to a two-year institution. Additionally, 75 percent reported taking at least one rigorous course, such as AP or IB.

The AVID Student Profile

AVID students are intrinsically motivated students with academic potential. Potential AVID students must have a desire and determination to succeed. They are willing to commit to enrollment and success in the rigorous coursework necessary to ensure college eligibility.

What happens in the AVID class?

AVID students complete college readiness activities and assignments to prepare them for the rigors of college. AVID students commit to weekly binder checks and bi-weekly progress report checks. They engage in AVID tutorials twice a week with college-aged tutors who guide and support them. AVID students also commit to extracurricular participation and community service and engage in career, college, and financial aid research.

How can I find out more about joining AVID?

Potential AVID students who wish to join AVID must complete an application during the registration process for the following school year (this usually happens during February – March for the following school year). Print the application to join AVID below.
