Physical Fitness Test

Physical Fitness Testing (PFT)

The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for students in California schools is the FITNESSGRAM®. The main goal of the test is to help students in starting life-long habits of regular physical activity. Tustin Unified School District administers the PFT in the months of March and April.  Please contact your school site for specific dates.

Per California Education Code, all students in grades 5, 7, and 9 are required to participate in the Physical Fitness Test (PFT), which consists of five components. These components assess levels of physical fitness that are associated with a degree of protection against diseases related to physical inactivity.

The five fitness areas tested are:

  • Aerobic Capacity
  • Abdominal Strength and Endurance
  • Upper Body Strength and Endurance
  • Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility
  • Flexibility
