Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a bridge between preschool and kindergarten for children turning 5 years old between September 2 and December 2. It is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program designed to build a solid foundation for success in school for "young" five-year olds. The program is funded by the Kindergarten Readiness Act 2010 that changes the kindergarten entry date to September 1.

TUSD will offer a high-quality Transitional Kindergarten program for eligible children who do not yet meet the minimum age criterion to enroll in kindergarten. Children who will be five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2020, and reside in the TUSD boundaries are eligible to register for kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year.

Transitional Kindergarten shall admit children whose fifth birthday falls between September 2 and December 2 of the 2020-21 school year. The Transitional Kindergarten program shall assist children in developing the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. The District’s Transitional Kindergarten shall be the first year of a two-year kindergarten program. Enrollment in the Transitional Kindergarten program shall be voluntary. Transportation is not provided.
