Highlights from the March 9 Board of Education Meeting

At the March 9 regular meeting of the Board of Education, Cub Scout Pack 235 opened the evening with a presentation of the colors as they led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Board of Education also honored our District Teachers of the Year, celebrating Elementary Teacher of the Year Cindy Herrell (Estock), Middle School Teacher of the Year Melanie Formaneck (Utt), and High School Teacher of the Year Jennifer Douglas (Tustin).

The Board recognized Foothill High School’s girls water polo team, along with Head Coach Paden Mitchell and Assistant Coach Isabel Rack, for winning the CIF Division 1 State Championship. During the championship match, goalie Emma Perrigo recorded 15 saves while Gianna Romero scored five goals. The team also celebrated its 20th consecutive league championship this season.

Board members also heard updates from student board members highlighting recent events and initiatives from their campuses. Presenting were Connor Waibel (FHS), Indaiah Lowe (THS), Emily Juarez (Hillview), Katally Lin (LMA), and Safiya Nawaz (BHS). Carson Carter (LMA) also shared updates on activities taking place at our elementary and middle schools.

In addition, the Board received several reports, including the second interim report presented by Chief Financial Officer Harold Sullins and Senior Director David Yang. An update on the Amplify Desmos math curriculum adoption was presented by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Maggie Villegas, Elementary Coordinator Karen Knudson, and Lead Math TOSA Dr. Monica Wynan.

Finally, Director of Nutrition Services Mark Chavez and Assistant Director Lucy Albera presented this month’s Bright Spot, highlighting the important work of our Nutrition Services team in supporting the health and wellness of our students.
