Highlights from the January 12 Regular Board Meeting

The regular meeting of the Board of Education on January 12 opened with celebration as the Board recognized the achievements of some outstanding students and staff. The Board honored Ladera Elementary's girls volleyball team and their coaches, Jay Warren and Nida Beg, in celebration of their first-place win in the 2025 Elementary Girls Volleyball Championship. In addition, the Board recognized Beckman Boys Cross Country and their coaches, Corey Schuld, Helen Flechner and Miguel Torres, in honor of their 2025 CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championship win. Following this, the Board honored and thanked classified employees Cynthia Estrada, Karen Marsch and Theresa Higgins Smith in celebration of their recent retirements. Lastly, the Board celebrated Beckman Varsity Football and their coaches Marcello Giuliano, William Puga, Al Galloway, Jake Garmon, Jeremy Richie, Melvin Irby, ZackCouey, Jacob Kissling and Bryan Carter in honor of their 2025 CIF Division 4A Southern Regional Championship and their Southern Section Division 8 Championship wins.

 

The Board was also excited to hear from our Student Board Members as they highlighted recent events and programs from their campuses. Sharing their reports were Sienna Prieto Harvey (THS), Emily Juarez (Hillview), Safiya Nawaz (BHS), Leah Green (FHS) and Carson Carter (Legacy). Indaiah Lowe (THS) shared an update of events from our elementary and middle schools from the dais.

 

The evening closed with this month's Bright Spot. Assistant Superintendent Chris Matos and Secondary Visual and Performing Arts TOSA Ysabel Gray shared an overview of how TUSD is building coherent, sustainable arts programs through standards-aligned curriculum, professional learning, community partnerships, and the strategic use of Proposition 28 funding.
