Hats off to Top Students, Staff and Schools in TUSD
The Tustin
Unified School District continues to receive accolades and
awards for its outstanding students, staff and schools. Good
news abounds throughout TUSD…
W.R. Nelson
Elementary School was selected as a Title I Academic Achievement
School by the California Department of Education. Nelson was
chosen for raising its test scores, reaching state goals on the
Academic Performance Index (API) and meeting rigorous criteria.
Tustin Memorial
Academy received the Service-Learning Leader School Award from
the California Department of Education. In order to qualify for
the award, schools not only had to meet their API growth targets
for the past two years, but they also had to use
service-learning as a schoolwide instructional method.
Columbus Tustin
Middle School Seventh- and Eighth-Grade Academic Pentathlon
Teams won top honors at the 2009 Orange County Academic
Pentathlon. The annual competition was sponsored by the Orange
County Department of Education. The seventh-grade team won
first place overall for the fifth year in a row. The
eighth-grade team won first place overall for the fourth time
out of the past five years. The 45 student participants earned
a combined 131 individual medals.
Columbus Tustin
School won the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports
“Front Runner Award.” Columbus Tustin was recognized by the
council for leading the way in engaging students in physical
activity as part of the 2009 Governor’s Challenge Competition.
Pioneer Middle
School’s Peer Assistance Leadership class was named “PAL Program
of the Year” for its outstanding work in the field of peer
leadership by the Orange County Department of Education.
School Readiness
Coordinator Lauralee Cabibi was recognized by the Orange County
Association for the Education of Young Children as Outstanding
School Readiness Coordinator. The TUSD Kindergarten Readiness
Program is in its fifth year and serves over 240 students at six
elementary schools.

Emily Neddersen, Pioneer Middle School culinary arts/fashion
design teacher Lisa Fuggitti and Beckman High School English
teacher Darin Hallstrom were selected as the 2009 TUSD Teachers
of the Year. They represented the District in the
2009-10 Orange County Teachers of the Year program.
Hallstrom was named a semifinalist in the county program
by the Orange County Department of Education.
Red Hill
Elementary School head custodian David Miranda was selected as
the 2009 TUSD Classified Employee of the Year for his
significant contributions to the District and community.
The Association
of California School Administrators (ACSA), Region 17, selected
its 2009 Administrators of the Year for Orange County:
Superintendent Richard Bray – Superintendent of the Year.
Tustin High School Principal Jonathan Blackmore – Secondary
Principal of the Year. Utt Middle School Principal Christine
Matos – Middle School Principal of the Year. Tustin High School
Assistant Principal Chad Smith – Secondary Co-Administrator of
the Year. Nelson Elementary School Principal John Laurich –
Valuing Diversity Award Winner.
Here is the
latest news in TUSD’s Building Program: Foothill High School’s
new Science Center is scheduled to open in the fall. Work on
the Foothill swimming pool will begin this summer and is
scheduled for completion in the fall of 2010. Northrup Stadium
at Tustin High School is being upgraded. Tustin High is
breaking ground on its new quad. Construction on Tustin High’s
new Science Center will begin this fall. New two-story
classroom additions are being built at Hicks Canyon Elementary
School and Beckman High School. Construction work continues on
the new Orchard Hills K-8 School, which is scheduled to open in
the fall of 2010. Heritage School (grades K-5) at Tustin Legacy
is scheduled to open in the fall of 2010.
