1.  Which school should my child attend?

Top

Assigned neighborhood attendance areas are determined by street name and number. About 90 percent of our students attend their neighborhood school. We do have an open enrollment policy that allows students to apply to attend a school other than their assigned school if there is space available.

Click HERE for School Attendance Locator.

For more information, call the Student Services department at (714) 730-7301, ext. 326.

2.  What are school starting and ending times?

A copy of the bell schedule may be picked up at the school office or you may call the school. The variance in starting and ending times is most often determined by bus schedules.

3.  Can I enroll in a school other than my assigned school?

Top

The district has an open enrollment policy that allows students to apply to attend a school other than their assigned school. Approvals are for one year and are reviewed each year. Transfer applications will be available at each school, the District Office, and this website at the beginning of the calendar year and submitted for consideration on the dates established.  Each school is required to serve the students who live within its attendance boundaries before accepting students outside the boundaries. More information, procedures, and criteria are available from Student Services.

Open enrollment is conducted based on "space availability". The order is determined by drawing.

Transportation is not provided.

4.  Does Tustin Unified have specific attendance boundaries for each school?

Top

Yes. The District believes in the neighborhood school concept. Each school has defined attendance boundaries in order to ensure there is enough room for the students living in the area where the school is located.

5.  When do the middle and high schools register for classes?

Top

Registration for classes is typically completed during the two weeks prior to the opening day of school. Contact the high school for specific dates and/or appointments.

6.  I have a student arriving from outside the U.S.  What documents will the District need?

Top

The District requires no documents. INS may require I-20 and may be contacted for specific requirements. I-20's are only issued to parents, grandparents, and aunts or uncles of TUSD students.

English language testing is required by California law for each student if a language other than English is spoken in the home.

For more information, call the Student Services department at (714) 730-7301, ext. 326.

7.  Which school is your best school?

Top

That is a very difficult question. By the word "best" some people mean highest test scores, others mean the most awards won by a school's athletic teams or drama departments or musical groups. Still others are interested in the newest schools. For most of Tustin Unified's parents, the best school is the school where their children attend.

8.  How long is the student instructional day?

Top

The number of instructional minutes are set by the State of California. For example kindergarten requires 36,000 instructional minutes annually. All schools have 180 days of instruction per year. The average daily minutes of instructional time are:

  • Kindergarten:      203 minutes

  • Grades 1-3:        286 minutes

  • Grades 4-6:        308 minutes

  • Grades 7-12:      368 minutes

The decision for number of recess minutes and lunch minutes are determined by each school. Contact your local school for starting and ending times.
