District Profile

The Tustin Unified School District has a long history of excellence that continues to grow and be enriched by the accomplishments of its students, teachers, staff, and community. The District was established July 1, 1972, upon unification of the Tustin Elementary School District and the Tustin Union High School District.

The District offers a wide range of programs and support services for K-12 students and adults. It has committed itself to quality education on behalf of all students.

  • Located in the central part of Orange County, 37 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 88 miles north of San Diego, the Tustin Unified School District has 18 elementary schools, a K-8 school, 5 middle schools, 4 high schools and alternative and adult education programs.

  • The District includes the City of Tustin, portions of Santa Ana, the Foothills portion of the unincorporated area of Orange County (North Tustin), and portions of the City of Irvine (West Irvine, Orchard Hills and Northpark).

  • The District serves over 23,000 students with a 2010-11 budget of $166 million.

  • The District's ethnic population reflects that of the state of California: 42.4% Hispanic, 15.3% Asian, 1.9% Filipino, 2.2% African American, .3% American Indian, .6% Pacific Islander and 33.6% White.

  • Tustin serves as a destination for non-English speaking families from 73 different countries.  District students speak more than 50 languages and 34.4% of students are either limited English or Fluent English Proficient.

  • During the past six years, the District has received four National Blue Ribbon School honors and over 20 California Distinguished School awards.

  • High standards of excellence in academics, visual and performing arts, and athletics are the hallmarks for Tustin schools along with a major emphasis on educational technology in the classrooms.

  • Tustin schools consistently score well on state tests. Students at the TUSD schools receive top scores among state schools on annual standardized tests. All three high schools have shown an increase in test scores and are well above the State average.

  • In past years, Tustin schools have been honored by School Match, the nation's largest school-selection consulting firm, with its prestigious "What Parents Want" award.  Only 15 percent of the nation's school districts have received the award.

  • Many residents choose to live and remain in Tustin because of the area's highly rated high schools. Beckman, Foothill and Tustin high schools have produced many National Merit Scholars. Nearly 90 percent of all district graduates attend colleges and universities. The District's graduation rate is 95.6 percent.

  • California Teacher of the Year in 2004 was from Tustin High School.  Orange County Teacher of the Year for 2007 was a teacher from Hewes Middle School.

  • An ideal place to live, Tustin offers a library, museum, parks, hospitals and shopping centers. Within a short distance are nationally acclaimed colleges and universities, the beach, the mountains and many other cultural and recreational opportunities.
