Tustin High Sponsors 18th Annual Model United Nations Conference
Tustin High School is
sponsoring its 18th annual Model United Nations (MUN)
Conference on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 20 and 21. This
year’s theme is “Peace Transcends Language.”
About 1,500 students from high schools throughout the state are expected to participate in the event, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tustin High seniors and MUN secretaries Caitlin Fromknecht and Benji Wigley are coordinating the event. “This is the largest high school student-run MUN conference in the country,” said MUN Director Linda Levine. High school students will represent various countries and debate global issues, such as children’s and women’s rights, economics, food and agriculture, world health and others. Students are divided into committees based on the topics they are debating and grade levels. Individual and group awards will be presented to students in several categories, including Outstanding Delegates and Best Delegation award for their school. MUN is an academic elective program that offers an opportunity for students to simulate the activities of the United Nations organization. Students learn skills in researching, writing, negotiating, speaking and debating. The program was started at Tustin High in 1991 as an extracurricular activity and has evolved into a four-year curriculum with over 300 participating students, ranging from top honors to special needs students. Students compete at local, state, national and international levels. “Over the years, Tustin High’s MUN team has ranked among the strongest in the nation and we plan to continue our standard of excellence,” Levine said. The team plans to travel to Paris and Italy for international MUN conferences in December and February, respectively. For more information about the Tustin High MUN program, call (714) 730-7570. |
