Tustin Unified Sends 32 Robotics Teams to State Championships

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TUSD Robotics

TUSD Robotics teams received more than 60 awards throughout this season and 32 TUSD teams are headed to the Southern California State Championships. 57 teams representing 14 TUSD schools competed in the official season using the engineering design process to design, build, and program robots. Don’t miss the Tustin Unified Robotics Heads to State video to hear directly from the students themselves.

Teams have prepared to compete in three areas including driving performance, programming performance, and interviewing with judges to demonstrate how well they have used and documented the engineering design process. TUSD Robotics teams excel in developing strong engineering notebooks that begin with defining the problem and brainstorming design solutions and strategies. Teams must work collaboratively to divide up the tasks of researching, developing ideas, building, and programming several robots each season.

"One of the most important parts of having a successful team is being able to have good communication, good leadership skills, and being able to work together effectively,” said, 10th-grade student Jacob Keller.

TUSD is proud to offer robotics programs at each of our 10 secondary and 18 elementary schools. With additional elementary teams joining the program in January, approximately 550 students and more than 100 teams each year build and develop their skills and interest in Science Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), through the TUSD Robotics Program. The mission is to inspire students to pursue education and career pathways in the STEM fields. Students who participate in the mentor-based robotics programs naturally build skills that foster innovation, creativity, critical thinking, communication, self-confidence, and leadership skills. A common thread that is often discussed is the need to work as a team collaboratively to meet deadlines and overcome challenges.

“Being successful is fifty percent learning how to build a robot and fifty percent learning how to function on a team, ”

said Cari Williams, TUSD Science and Engineering TOSA.

Even during the pandemic when students were participating virtually, TUSD students continued to thrive in the Robotics Program. Through virtual coding competitions, and apps like VEX Code VR to code virtual robots and Onshape for designing in CAD environments, TUSD students built their skills and confidence.

The TUSD Robotics Program was founded in the summer of 2014 and would not be possible without the amazing support of the TUSD Board of Education, the Tustin Public Schools Foundation (TPSF), support from dedicated teachers, district administration, coach teams, and hundreds of volunteers. Congratulations to all of the teams and best of luck at the tournament! Visit www.tusdrobotics.com to learn more.

State to Reassess Masking Requirement For Schools on February 28, 2022

Dear TUSD Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,

This communication is an update to the Mask Requirement communication that we shared this morning. This afternoon, Dr. Mark Ghaly, Secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency announced that the state will reassess California’s indoor mask requirements for TK-12 schools on February 28, 2022.

Dr. Ghaly stated, “Masking requirements will expire as conditions improve” and reiterated, “there is no change at this time to the CDPH school masking requirement however, on February 28, 2022, CDPH will reassess data/conditions for a future change to the statewide school masking requirement.”

Over the next two weeks, the state will look at indicators such as case rates, testing positivity percentages, hospitalizations, pediatric hospitalizations, and vaccine rates, and on February 28, announce a timeline for lifting the school masking mandate. In the meantime, face coverings in K-12 settings will remain a state requirement for students and staff members, while students are present indoors. Masks are optional in all outdoor settings.

TUSD will continue to monitor local and state guidelines and provide timely communication in an effort to keep our community informed. The health and safety of our students, staff, families, and community continues to be our priority. Thank you for your continued support and partnership. You can read more regarding today’s announcement on the Orange County Department of Education Newsroom webpage.
